What do I need for my baby?
Preparing for a new family member is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience. Many expectant parents ask themselves: "What do I need for my baby?" and although it is, of course, very individual, there are a few things that are especially good to have at home when you come home with your newborn. Our best advice is to remember to cherish the first moments with your newborn baby and not worry too much about the things you have or don't have. It will work out <3
In this post, we go through the basic things you need to have for your baby!
Good to have for baby
Baby cot and bed linen
Having a baby cot and bed linen where you can let your little one rest is crucial. Your baby probably won't sleep in their own bed for long periods until at least a couple of months, but it's still good to have a bed to get the baby used to and to have a place where you know the baby is safe. Choose a baby cot that meets safety standards and complement it with soft, comfortable bed linen.
Changing table and diaper bag
A sturdy changing table makes nappy changes easier. An ergonomic changing table saves your back and allows you to change nappies in a simpler and more comfortable way. A good diaper bag with many compartments is also indispensable when you are on the go or just out for a walk. Fill the diaper bag with things that are good to have, such as a water bottle with a straw and a seat cushion that you can take with you everywhere so you can sit comfortably and relieve your perineum wherever you are. Other good things to pack are, of course, extra nappies, wipes, extra clothes for the baby (and maybe yourself), pacifiers, creams, and extra nursing pads in case you leak through your clothes.
Pram
Many babies like to go for a walk during their first time at home. It can be nice for you as a parent to get out in the fresh air and often (though not always...) babies sleep well in the pram. Choose a reliable pram that suits your lifestyle and make sure it is easy to handle. There's nothing worse than trying to fold a pram that doesn't cooperate...
Clothes for baby
Babies grow incredibly fast in the first period, so it's wise not to buy too much in the smallest sizes. Basic garments like bodysuits, soft trousers, and socks in various sizes are good to have at home. Baby clothes should be soft, comfortable, and easy to put on and take off.
Hygiene products
Besides nappies and wipes, you should use mild hygiene products that are specifically designed for babies. Often the products are labeled specifically for babies, but if you are unsure, you can ask at the pharmacy.
Breastfeeding or bottle-feeding equipment
Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, it is important to have the right equipment at home. A good nursing pillow can provide comfortable support during breastfeeding, and a high-quality breast pump is invaluable if you need to express milk. If you bottle-feed, make sure you have enough bottles and accessories at home, and if you breastfeed, it is good to have washable nursing pads and a moisturizing cream for dry nipples so you are well prepared.
Safety for baby and you
A baby monitor is not a must-have, but it will probably give you immense peace of mind when you can keep an eye on your baby even when you are not in the same room.
First aid kit for babies
A first aid kit adapted for infants is important to have at home. It should be equipped with items such as a thermometer, nasal drops, nasal aspirator, and pain-relieving medication approved for infants.
Welcoming a new family member is exciting but also requires some preparation. By having these basic items ready, you can feel more prepared for this new, exciting phase in your life. Remember that every family is unique, so adapt this list to your own needs and lifestyle!
