Interesting Facts About the Umbilical Cord

Did you know that if the umbilical cord is clamped immediately after the baby is born (early clamping), the blood remains in the placenta and goes to waste (or can be stored in stem cell banks). If you instead wait for 3 minutes (now more of a rule than an exception in Sweden), most of the blood will flow to the baby, giving it an extra blood transfusion of about 1dl of blood, which corresponds to about 2 liters in an adult.
The blood is rich in oxygen, glucose, and stem cells. It reaches all vital organs and fills the body's cells with energy and building blocks. It aids in the healing of any brain damage caused by harmful oxygen deprivation and also contributes to the child having better motor and cognitive function at four years old compared to children who had early clamping.
