Harmless bleeding during pregnancy

Ofarliga blödningar under graviditeten

There is too little discussion about various types of bleeding that can occur during early pregnancy, so we thought we'd go through 4 different types of bleeding that are completely harmless.

  1. Implantation bleeding
Bleeding that can occur when the egg attaches to the uterine lining. For some, this may be the first sign of pregnancy.
  2. Bleeding after sex
During sex in pregnancy, the cervix can sometimes become easily irritated and one might experience a slight bloody discharge. This is completely harmless.
  3. Breakthrough bleeding
Sometimes in early pregnancy, the body hasn't quite understood yet that it should stop menstruating. It can then bleed from the uterine lining. This bleeding usually occurs during the time you would normally have your period and typically ends after the first trimester.
  4. Infection bleeding
This type of bleeding is usually due to an infection on the cervix or in the vagina. It often occurs in conjunction with foul-smelling and heavy discharge. Always inform your midwife if your discharge changes character. This bleeding can be treated with antibiotics.
